DIGGING INTO ROOTS (AND PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES)
This is not a
class that will be teaching your child Latin. (although we may do
that later.)
This is a class that I have had on my heart for
quiet some time now - especially for the upper grades. Quick story:
when I was in high school, I was co-editor of the yearbook. After
it was all packed up to be published, we still had half a semester
left in the school year and had to fill it with a class. My teacher
got the bright idea of teaching us prefixes, suffixes and roots the
rest of that semester. It was not what I wanted to do. I couldn't
see any reason for learning that stuff BUT when it came time
for my SAT's (soon after that) I was shocked how much I used that
class in deciphering words I didn't know and how to spell them. That
class was one of the most powerful tools I had in college. It still
is. I tell that story because sometimes in high school you wonder
how this is going to help but this class is one of the few that really
did prepare me for the future. We have been using some of these
concepts in the Spelling class that we have been doing this summer.
I don't go around using the word "concelebrate" but if I know that "con"
is "with," I can figure out the "concelebrate" means to "celebrate
with."
Anyway, that's what the "Digging into Roots (and Prefixes and
Suffixes)" Class will be about.
